Day 4 Reflections by Ashley and Rachel

We had a good sleep last night, as we managed to extinguish most of the flies in the evening. We woke up much earlier this morning, as lessons started earlier as well.

Our welfare team for today made us Maggie noodles for breakfast, which was a good energy booster for the day ahead!

Our group set off in a pick-up truck to the house where we helped in the construction of rainwater harvesting systems. The ride was bumpy and breezy, and it was exciting, especially for first-timers like us.

Part of the construction of the jumbo jars required us to climb into the jumbo jar and scoop out all the sand inside. We had a nice sand bath inside the jumbo jar.

The rest of the groups went off to the school for English and hygiene lessons, while the welfare team did their marketing, cleaning and cooking.

We had some free time in between lunch and our activities, where some of us took our much needed afternoon naps, while others did their laundry by the well. After this experience, we really love our washing machines and dryers! Washing clothes is really no joke when you have to bend over and scrub. It was embarrassing too for some to wash sensitive items. Haha.

Today was a milestone for some of us as we experienced Bushmen lifestyle in Cambodia, peeing in the wild as there was no toilet nearby. It was certainly a memorable experience!

Despite our successful fly extinguishing efforts last night, a new generation of flies colonized our house, yet again, and some had to resort to sitting along the dark staircase to avoid flies in their food.

We realized tonight that the sky is so clear over here, and is perfect for star-watching. Our pro’s Kewei and Jiahuang shared a bit of their astronomy knowledge with the rest of us.

During our free time, we sat at the door and watched the children who were playing outside the house. Many of the games, to our amazement, were games that we played in our childhood too! Simon says, twin tower, and lao ying zhuo xiao ji… These games, simple as they may be, form their everyday life, and yet can still make them satisfied and happy. How we wish we could go back to those childhood days…

Goodnight!
